The Warmies

Post by SWN Y MOR »

The Warmies,(yes real name) is a double concrete,"jettied" ramp.Launch/parking fees are $15.00 via coin machine. It gets its name from the fact it's in the Newport power station cooling water outflow. We found it pretty sheltered,my only gripe was the long sail just to get out of the break water.Once out,you have the choice of either the Yarra or Maribyrnong rivers for motor cruises or head south into port philip bay.Its position meant that there was no wash from hooning jetskiers etc but it is a very busy ramp with fishermen coming and going all the time.

Having looked at many of the boat ramps around the bay, I would say this (along with St.Kilda) is one of the best. A great feature of the area is The Strand shopping strip. A great place to drop off the daughter and wife on the way to sailing bliss. (They are not keen to go out on the boat - at least not yet). As I'm using it as a base in the future, I'll be posting picture posts of the best spots the area has to travel too - several of which have already been mentioned. :D

The advantage of the warmies,is that you can travel up river to both the Yarra or Maribyrnong rivers.OR down into the bay.My only gripe is the cost,$15 is way too much for what little you get.and it's total lack of any services.I prefer St.Helens in geelong,At $4 you get toilets/showers(no cost) Coast guard station, free BBQ's a small marina, also free. free.If you fish? there's a fish cleaning bench with running water.Corio bay may not have what Port philip has but there is always a trip to eastern beach,

I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to give me a physical address or gps for the warmies.I live in Adelaide & would like to trailer my boat over in the warmer weather & cruise the yarra river and any other area suitable. Is it safe to leave a car & trailer at the ramp for a few days ? Is there any fuel available locally ?
Thanks
Brian

Re: The Warmies Saturday - get there early

Post by Hazza »

Turned up last Saturday at 8:00 am and all the trailer spots were taken - must be over 50 spots (GONE).. So trying 7:30 next time. This is a huge contrast to when we went there through the week where there were plenty of spots. Great Spot to launch from but motor boat (hoons) abound on Saturdays - trying to push in the reversing bays - chasing you for your ticket when leaving - errrrrrr !!!! .

that is why i prefer St.Helens.Triple ramps all jettied free marina ,toilets, showers, coast guard station and BBQ's.NO hoons and all for $4.00,,,,yup.FOUR dollars.I'm there in an hour, same as Warmies. The ONLY reason i use the warmies is to access the rivers.
