Turning boat over to repaint hull

Post by Sting »

I'm in the process of striping the hull of my TS16 back to repaint it and have reached the point that need to turn the boat over. Can anyone suggest the best way of doing this.

Put the mast up with a long rope attached to the "hounds" (where the shrouds attach)
Launch it onto the ground, protected by mattresses or tyres. To do this, I run a rope from the bow eye down each side of the boat to the stern and tie off to a tree or a solid wall. Drive the trailer forwards slowly, and the boat will come off. Disable the trailer tilt first. Don't attach the rope to the transom, or it may pull off!
Pull down on the rope to bring the mast down sideways, putting further padding under the gunwales as the boat goes onto it's side
Attach the free end of the rope to something solid, like the tow bar of your car. The righting moment is very powerful and it's hard to hold the mast down
You'll then be able to paint the upper side of the hull. Repeat the process on the other side.
When you've finished, back the trailer up to the bow and winch the trailer back under the hull still attached to the car (hand brake off and in neutral off course!)

Once a TS16 has a cabin, it's dangerous to completely invert it. The cabin is not built to take the stress of supporting the hull. It is possible to hang the hull from straps, or build frames to invert it, but I've found the above method quick and easy

G,day .this is my 2nd attempt at reply as half way through all my typing disappeared.
I completely stripped my boat both sides while still on trailer with no problems.
removed support on each side one at a time and propped with a broom handle but boat was happy to sit level.
It is a messy job and time consuming.
I used a heat gun to remove most paint and remnants of fibreglass over old repairs.
A cheap Ozito Orbital sander did the rest removing all pink primer back to original wood. Wore out the Velcro pad but for $6,00 purchased a sheet of self adhesive Velcro for some sort of bench sander and cut out with wad punch and scissors and ripped old Velcro off and re applied new stuff. Thus extending life of sander.
3 coats of epoxy [with preservative ],2 coats of primer filler and 2 coats of 2 pack have completed job plus cloth tape over any old repairs or edges.
My only mistake was to wear my good glasses [both ] before realising lots of minute paint specks now dried on and wont budge.
By stripping back found some old dodgy repairs underneath and to side of boat .Looked like builders bog so heat gun made easy work . Where I had previously started to paint with single pack enamel I sanded off as did not want to disturb repairs or epoxy.
Good luck .Ian

I forgot to mention that when I stripped and painted keel I had to jack boat up off rollers individually by jacking up under keel and knocking pin out of roller .
I discovered small bits of rot where keel sat on rollers but was made worse because some one had encased in fibre glass and then fitted a stainless channel over the lot so trapped water.
I now have coated in eoxy and paint and am yet to decide whether to fit a wear strip or not.
Picture attached is when I painted underneath with single pack enamel up to chines but have since removed .
Where I have found old patches underneath I have sanded smooth and applied resin cloth covering all edges and have done like wise to opposite side inside boat.
Odly enough my centre board box appears sound but when I jacked boat up and loosened rope would not drop down .
I made a new top and varnished it so not sure if interfering ?? Will investigate later.
Think I will try and coat inside with paint brush and handle.
I used a mini roller for epoxy and a slightly bigger one for paint and just discarded each time after use .
Hope maybe this year to have in the water. Ian Theobald Nowra.NSW

Picture of boat in its prime. Hopefully will get back to some resemblance soon.
I believe the boat was called Blossom so I was told ??? Have no history of owners or when was made. Ian
